MY SKETCHBOOKS are valuable source material for paintings.
Although I much prefer to paint on location and better still out doors, ‘en plein air’, often a more formal painting is required or commissioned. Cley next the Sea was one such (below) - sketched after a good waterside walk, sitting on a bench chatting with a WWII Spitfire pilot, it was then used as a reference for a commissioned painting. These are done in my makeshift studio.
But if I have the time, the view excites, there is somewhere comfortable to work and my wife has a good book…there is little more satisfying than an hour or so in relaxed concentration enjoying a view while interpreting it onto a sheet of white paper.
Bibette Head, Alderney was fun (below right). And it was next to the bar...always helps.
