Kingston Market

Met up with the Dodgers in Kingston Church to sketch/paint in the market.  There are two now - the Old Market in the market square (where else?) and another along the pedestrianised shopping street.
The historic Market Place has been in use since around 1170 and has been a place for celebration, the ideal location for Kingston’s criminals to get their comeuppance in the stocks and for selling. Kingston’s first market was recorded in 1242
Lots to chose from.  I opted for the old and a bench with a view of the Old Town Hall, Church Tower (not the most inspiring piece of architecture) and a range of some of the many stalls which provided strong perspectives to aid composition - and people to provide further challenge.  It really buzzes; plenty of observers which is nice as they are usually complimentary.
Only having an hour and a half before I had to go....image 1 is that point. Image 2 the finished (perhaps) product.

The Serpentine Gallery

Haven't done much (ie nothing!) since Hebden Bridge but today went to The Royal Academy to see the Peter Cook RA (Archigram) exhibition. I am a great fan of both his highly innovative architecture and the way he and his collaborators draw and present their work.  Then onto The Serpentine Gallery to see the Bjarke Ingels pavillion. Quite different this year.  A friend described it as Leggo.  I can see what he means but it is hugely successful - unlike my sketch.  Although a very simple concept really difficult to draw so I chickened out, doing the Gallery with just the edge of the stacked boxes which make optical waves as you look from different angles.  From one simple unit, hollow square 'tubes' stacked a fascinating variety has been achieved.  Inside it is pleasantly calm despite being a cafeteria....
