One year we hit the 500 anniversary of the Battle of Flodden and the media circus recording the event. I recorded the fierce confrontation between two historians of different opinions.
I’ve lost count of the number of holidays we have spent I Northumberland over the past 30 or so years. It is only in the last 10 or thereabouts I have made a conscious effort to sketch/paint. But that amounts to a fist full of books and a few framed paintings. Some from past years here: Dunstanburgh Castle is a favourite - lots of studies of and from it. This just one currently framed and one of those picked for The Artful Dodgers show in Kingston. One year we hit the 500 anniversary of the Battle of Flodden and the media circus recording the event. I recorded the fierce confrontation between two historians of different opinions. And a couple more for fun: I have put this years 11 on a new page here.

At the beginning of April I mentioned my weeks ahead of trips up to London which could have been tedious so I determined to sketch each time. As it happened it was not in any way tedious so sadly fewer sketches. Just 12.
Mainly in and around South Kensington which could have become a bit repetitive in itself but one of the great benefits of drawing is it makes you look not only as you draw but in finding the views. The variety in such a well defined - not to say well refined – area is astonishing from the rooftop conservatory, through crown on a parapet, rows of ‘slab’ chimney stacks, buskers to maximum site use of the wedge shaped apartments (formerly called flats) between the underground and Thurlough Square. Reminiscent of but nowhere near as fine as New York’s Flat Iron Building. I've put three in this blog before, but I’ve added a page for London with all 12 as a set. In a week’s time I’m off to Northumberland…lots to see, sketch and paint there. |
